I played Borderlands on the weekend, it was the crappiest game I have ever played. It’s like a mixture of Fallout with Wall-E from the Disney movie Wall-E. When I’m tired games usually wake me up, but this game sent me right to sleep, perfect if you’re wanting to sleep on a Saturday night and in your early twenties.
Basically all you do is shoot and do stupid missions; like assemble a stupid robot who seems to experience the feeling of pain. The graphics look good, but where is the fucking game play and decent storyline? Where is the awesome factor? It has nothing. You shoot, kill, pick up loot and weapons. Lather, rinse and repeat.
I would have loved to been at the planning meetings for this game.

Multi-player might be marginally better than single player, but you can only shoot and loot for so long before it gets repetitive and boring. I much prefer Grand Theft Auto 4 which doesn’t get boring so easily and has a little more diversity.
GameSpot actually gave this game an 8.5, what the hell were they smoking when they reviewed this? Probably a lot of weed, I hear it makes things seem a lot funner than they actually are. I think maybe the development and story-writing team were reaching into the same dope bag too.

I personally find the characters very funny, and the whole game very entertaining. Playing the game over xbox live co-op is far superior to single player, I would highly recommend actually spending some time doing this. The game has a ridiculously deep level of weapon attachments and customisable objects.

I´m playing it and enjoying it a lot atm. I´m not very far in the game (level 16 I think) and am doing some missions and killing a bunch of stuff. I´ve heard there isn´t much to the story, but I think the Diablo element is what makes the game for a lot of people. I enjoy finding cool stuff in the game and I heard stat wise there are millions of different weapons in the game.
I’ve been playing off and on up to level 30, and I don’t know why I continue. There is literaly nothing driving this game forward. The story is paper thin that I dont even bother reading what the quests are for because they don’t make sense. I just run to a place, kill someone, and turn in. Then repeat that a million times.
The weapons are well and good, but who the hell cares. I want to know why every single person on this planet is out to kill me. In fact, I’d like to really understand why there are so many people to kill in the first place. What the hell are they doing on this stink planet with no food? And why are the borders of the game surrounded by giant killer laser towers. Was someone going to write that in? It kind of feels like a dumber Shadow of Chernobyl. I stayed with that game because it had a cool background story, but nothing really in game to keep me inspired. This game has no back story and no in game, which is just sad.
Avoid this game unless you have 3 other friends to play with who can hold a converstaion. If it’s just you, save your money.
I just completed it and tomorrow I´m gonna have another go at it with a couple of friends. I think you are looking at this game from a “wrong” angle. For an RPG it sucks, but for a fun game that is like Diablo and Serious Sam combined, it´s pretty sweet IMO. It´s all about the looting and killing.

I think reading ftw’s reply was destroying my braincells. Good god man learn how to fucking speak. Back to the main point, the game is ok if you just like to run around and shoot stuff, I just bought it and I think it’s pretty fun, but there are two things that I dislike about it right off the bat.
1. There is very little to no storyline at all, which just sucks. I’m really into games that have deep stories to them.
2. The multiplayer is just horrible, there’s only a few games and the ones that I try to join I constantly time out, and even when I manage to join a game. It’s either very, very, very laggy, or my teammates never talk and they are all running around in random places. This means we get nothing done.
All in all I think the game could be improved in many ways, especially for 50 bucks.

1. The storyline: You were a kid who grew up listening to stories of “The Vault”. When you grow up, you decide to become a mercenary and seek out this legend. You get helped by a ‘Guardian Angel’ throughout the game while trying to find four pieces of the Vault Key.
2. Get some friends.
Hype Hype Hype. Thats all this game (coaster for my drink) is. The review is spot on. I have not read all the comments but one thing is clear, Fallout 3 is the first FPS/RPG hybrid not IMHO. Randomly generated loot doesn’t make a game an RPG fyi. Dry garbage. Go here get/kill x item/creature, bring back. As for the person that said this crap “game” was the same premise as Diablo you are sadly mistaken. Diablo had a story that made my mouth water, bl made me feel dehydrated. You “gamers” that like this kind of grind just remember this, the industry that puts out this kind of unpolished fodder loves “gamers” like you, they make sequels for you to think your even more fulfilled. I knew this was complete crap about 10-15 hours in and it isn’t getting any better. Play 25+ hours just for the sake of getting the chance to come upon a great gun is a weak parlor trick that only fools non-hardcore gamers. For others to assume that the reviewer didn’t finish the game makes the review incomplete is petty at best. The game is also way to easy.
Improvements I would make:
Make you pay for the runners, keep the one you buy till you purchase another one, make them customisable other than color and not look like all the other ones. (Horses in Oblivion)
Pay for ammo/repairs on said runners.
Stash spot for your stuff like a real RPG (Oblivion/Witcher)
NPCs have something other than idle banter to say. Improve interaction by getting NPCs to give clues rather than poorly scripted banter.
A real time cycle…15 mins of day and 15 mins of night? Does Pandora have more than one sun? Mayhaps add a moon light effect.
Different enemy layouts. Fallout three had different looking enemies, why can’t this game come up with randomly generated characters. Its all the same…just different names/stats/colors.
All these improvements can be implemented well within the time constraints that Gearbox put forth and should’ve been there to give the game realism and value. There are so many more improvements but these are just a few right off the top of my head. I will never buy a Gearbox game ever again.

Why did i spend my summer break playing borderlands thinking it was going to be epic after lvl 30 or so?… i just clocked it and im lvl 32, WTF! now im told i have the option to start “PlayThrough 2″ with no incentive other than higher level mobs and higher level guns, hell no!
I knew i should of went with Dragon Age instead but i choose BL due to the hype, next time i will go with my instincts.
The worst part is that, yes i helped contribute to the hype, i.e i told all my friends who owned PS3 that BL was THE game to own, i have now finished the game well ahead of them and havnt the heart to tell them they just wasted 100 bucks!!

Every time I ask someone what’s good about Borderlands, they instantly reply “it’s fun” and give no reason. Well I asked many people(on the internet) and got the exact same replies. So I bought it,MY GOD this game is awful!! I swear you’re right I get sleepy after 5 minutes of playing. The wasteland looks exactly the same, I don’t know how anyone could say that the graphics are good. The music,the sound effects, the visuals are garbage. Not to mention there’s no story and no information on the characters. And the voice acting sucks.
Borderlands is the type of game that ruins both the FPS genre and the RPG genre. Developers think by merging the key components and gimmicks of each genre (leveling up, loot, weapon attachments, etc.) they can maximize sales to fans of both types of games. In the process they utterly forget what makes each genre, and any game for that matter, worth playing in the first place: a decent story.
Think of how simple the gameplay concept of a game like Half-Life is. It has no gimmicks whatsoever yet it’s an amazing game. It’s as straightforward as you get for a game, but is driven by a decent storyline and most importantly GOOD combat. Add to that games like Goldeneye 64, Bioshock, Timesplitters — these are how models for how FPS games should be made.
Borderlands basically took Fallout 3, diluted the story to death and added more gimmicks for sales. The main new gimmick being co-op. You shouldn’t NEED other people to play with for an FPS or RPG game to be worth your time. If Borderlands NEEDS 3 other friends to be enjoyable, I have a newsflash: the game isn’t what you are enjoying, what you are actually enjoying is the time talking with your friends.

Glad to find out I was not the only one. Kept seeing review after review of 8.5 to 10 and figured it must get better from some type of in-game twist so I kept playing. I was wrong. I play FPS and RPGs but this combo game was missing a lot. The randomly generated loot, that was the big draw, isn’t worth the time. I’d rather play a game where if I were to collect loot the loot would constantly get better or there would be some type of gun that you could work for that would make the effort worth it. In this game I found my best pistol in a crate on a roof in New Haven in the first third of the game, after that the random guns were just something to sell and since you can’t carry much (yes even with the 42 slots) either you leave stuff or run back and forth to the vending machines. The ending was another big let down, didn’t need any strategy and the reward is to let you play through again. Waiting on Bioshock 2 and Mass effect 2.
Epic game. To all Blands haters, fuck off and go play shitty games like WoW. Best game ever, I’m level 50 and I’m still playing it. Super fun

This is not the first FPS/RPG hybrid. That would be either Arena or Daggerfall dependinn on who you talk to.
The game is okay and the mulitplayer is better than average as long as the players are about the same level and none are “loot whores”. If BL2 corrects some of the problems then it could be one of the greatest titles in history.
Sadly, the developer has done one of strangest things ever done on any platform. The newest update on MS Live removes vital bought and paid for content, the red chests in New Haven, and then offeres even better red chests in DLC for an additional charge.
90% of the DLC is crap anyway. They know this and that is why there are no refunds but to remove something from the players machine and offer it back for more money has got to be a first.

I really don’t get why everyone is so hostile about this game. I played it and I totally get the formula. Kill shit, loot, repeat. There’s always more guns to find and more people to kill. Plus, the second playthrough actually challenges you to be good at the game and think about your character spec. Not only that, it’s retarded boss! I leveled a guy to 50 and now all I want to do is try a new class out. The game might not be all that everyone was hoping for, but it got the job done in my case. I love borderlands and don’t regret buying it one bit. I hope borderlands 2 is made, and if so, I believe it will be just as boss as the first.

I can see why lots of people don’t like the game, but if you like to play FPS and MMO I don’t see many other games catering to your needs. Oblivion is amazing, but no online capabilities is a huge drawback. Don’t get me wrong, though, I can solo games for weeks and the appeal still lasts, but maybe that’s why I like Borderlands so much. I’ll agree it’s pretty much a cheesy Fallout ripoff, but it doesn’t mean the game isn’t fun. Some people just like to kill shit, like me, and I don’t think many other games do it quite like BL.

Anyways i haven’t really seen what people likes about borderlands? I usually get tired of games that gets repetive but borderlands has been a fine game for me atleast. The terrains, and stuff, it may be just me because i’m running as a sniper class, but there’s been alot space for me to use creativy, unlike most games doesn’t have that feel.
i guess some people just don’t like shooting alien monsters and insane mutated psychos in the face with over 100,000 weapons to choose from and four different classes that all have their advantages and are all different. i guess the people who don’t like it are way to picky and only like games that are made exactly for them, or they can’t kill the first five enemies. Maybe some people are scared of the enemies and say “i’m scared of it. i don’t like it anymore” or something like that. or maybe they don’t like rpg’s or fps’s, even though the game makes a great combination of both. it’s hard to understand how anyone could not like this. it has interesting art, a huge array of weapons to choose from, exciting missions and bosses, and it’s very satisfactory to kill or just shoot anything.
First of all, suggesting that GTA 4 is better should have your computer destroyed. You want to talk about overhyped? Exhibit A would be that game.

i personally loved the game, because i don’t have very high standards for a video game. i got to kill shit, nab awesome guns and sweet loot, got to see a wide range of maps, had lots of missions to do, varied enemies to kill, got to see some amazing graphics… i also got to customize my character and the overall presentation of everything in the game was flat out awesome.
but thats me, i don’t need a detailed storyline. being a vault hunter looking for the vault was enough for me, and i even enjoyed the ending.
if you’re unhappy with the game, just sell it or give it as a gift. don’t get so worked up over nothin’
I’m about to give up reading game reviews. The people writing them must be payed off. 10/10 for GTA4. Half way through I couldn’t wait for the game to end. It was good but not a 10, far from it. I rented Borderlands yesterday and it’s junk. The voice chat doesn’t work on PS3 and the menus are awful. To the people that like it, good for you. To the people bitching about the people that don’t like it, it’s my opinion and why are you wasting time complaining about me wasting time? We can play that childish game all day. This game is a 5 out of 10. It’s not that fun and after 5 hours I’m about ready to take it back. There is no point to this game. I have not idea what I’m doing. Some bus dropped me off in some hell hole where I perform meaningless tasks with a bunch of other people online that can’t communicate with each other because the game manufacturer can’t even get chat to work. I’ll admit, I waste a lot of time playing games but this game makes me actually want to mow the lawn or watch paint dry. If this is the future of gaming than I need to find a second job. At least I’ll make some money from doing dull meaningless tasks. I’m just glad others realize that they got ripped off.
I liked a lot the graphics, the landscape was great, and the sound was ok.
But I think matt it’s right: the keyword here is ‘meaningless’. I finished the game just about 30′ ago, and the last,er…’mission’, I keep walking around trying to get to the transition point WITHOUT fire a gun, just to add some challenge. I was using the sniper guy, mordecai, and I give up snipe peopleafter I got level 20: it was easier and faster just run and use a revolver on the enemy, retreat to a space the enemy won’t follow, and repeat. On level 36 retreating wasn’t even necessary. It felt like even the enemies were bored of me.
But I keep playing, because I was expecting to see the ‘vault’ (Fallout3 has vaults…couldn’t call it ‘chamber’, ‘pit’, ‘vortex’, ‘thing’ or anything else? ) and that was the main reason I got here…WTF! That’s the big finale?
I know I should not expect a Grim Fandango story-like, but came on! At least use half an idea to finish the story!
A better version would be a Borderlands without missions at all. Just creatures to kill, shops to buy, two or three likeable npc’s and zero story…at least it will not be such a dissapointment.

Playing though borderlands is pure torture.Combat mechanics comprises of an infinite iteration of waiting for the shields to regenerate running and gunning the dumb as hell AI soldiers.Story is a joke and levelling up is no longer a joy.
